INTERIOR DESIGN TRENDS 2023 – SUSTAINABLE DESIGN

Sustainable design has become one of this year’s most talked-about design trends.

Sustainable furniture has many advantages over conventional furniture - it is environmentally friendly, reduces waste, requires fewer resources to produce, and does no damage to the natural environment. People are searching for alternatives to traditional interior designs to protect our planet from global warming.

Designers can cater to this trend with furniture made from materials which are renewable, up-cycled, or non-toxic. Sustainability requires a great deal of research and planning, but designers can realise their projects by combining these elements.

You can get the house you really want with a bit of thought on how you can be more sustainable which brings me to an upcycled project I worked on. My client wanted to re-purpose an old Argos shoe cabinet she had for many years further into a feature sideboard for her entrance hall.

My client kept hold of the leftover wallpaper from decorating her entrance hall and I decided to utilise it! After dismantling the cabinet, the beige geometric textured wallpaper was cut to size and pasted onto all panels. The edges were finished off with contrasting gold tape and the old handles were replaced with contemporary knobs. Finally, the top of the cabinet was dressed with accessories. My client was thrilled with her up-cycled cabinet and I was thrilled with giving the old cabinet a new lease of life!

We know the interior design market is heading towards a more sustainable approach. It includes re-purposed items for everyday use and up-cycled projects just like this one! Sustainable design is a challenge, but a challenge designers are meeting more so now, thus one of the most focused interior design trends for 2023.
